LOL During my 'road band' days (early '80s), gas was .50, and my nightly budget to hotel the four of us was...$50/night (it was usually possible, unless we were in Minneapolis or Denver). It was still possible to make a subsistence living at it, provided you were working at least 250 nights/year.

Rough then; impossible now.

Thankful to have spent my formative rock and roll years with you and the crew, DWM. Those were days where I was out of my head, running on fumes, and having a great time playing music. Learned a lot. Isn't it nuts to think back on your olden days, and it looked like you could travel on the cheap and actually make some money playing music? Long gone, even if we were younger at this point. Different landscape out there.
